UV 9 · Very high

How long can I stay in the sun at UV 9?

At UV 9, fair skin (Fitzpatrick type II) burns in about 10 min without sunscreen. With SPF 30 applied the way most people do, that becomes about 54 min, but sunscreen should be reapplied at least every 2 hours. Darker skin types can stay longer; see the table.

Sea level, on land, UV held at 9. Sunscreen is counted the way most people apply it (about half the tested amount, roughly the square root of the SPF). Whatever the table says, reapply at least every 2 hours. Snow, sand and water reflect UV and shorten these times. Not medical advice.

What to do at UV 9

Avoid the midday sun. Shade, clothing, a hat, sunglasses and SPF 50 sunscreen; fair skin can burn in under 20 minutes.
